"What could I have done more for my vineyard?" -Jacob 5:41-Heavenly Father was not angry. He was sorrowful. I think He feels the same way about us. When we sin, He is not angry with us but wishes to know what He could have done to help us make right choices. He loves us and waits us to return. However, you might ask, "If God loves us, why does God punish us?" Can you stop children from burning their hands when they touch the hot stove? Can you take away any consequences of any actions that someone you love committed? No, you can't. God could but He wouldn't.
To understand this concept, you must read Mountains to Climb by President Eyring. I talked about this before. Pres. Eyring said as he talked about trials:
"There are reasons for that. Knowing those reasons may not give much comfort, but it can give you a feeling of patience. Those reasons come from this one fact: in Their perfect love for you, Heavenly Father and the Savior want you fitted to be with Them to live in families forever. Only those washed perfectly clean through the Atonement of Jesus Christ can be there."As we are tried and receive consequences for our sins, we learn to become more like God and Christ and mold ourselves to be "fitted" with Them. Of course, when we sin, we can't enter into the Kingdom of God because we are sinners. However, Pres. Eyring said that we must be washed clean through the Atonement of Christ. If God were a wrathful God, He would have only chosen few people to enter into the Kingdom of God or require certain conditions/qualifications to use the Atonement. However, because He is merciful and loving, He lets everyone to use the Atonement to be clean to enter into the Kingdom of God.
I know that Heavenly Father loves me. I know that when we sin, He waits for us to return to Him. We should always ask ourselves, "What can I do more?"
