I Work at a Zoo Called "Library" Part 10

(So the library has scanners that patrons can use but they have to check it out just like books to use it, and it's been like that for years.)

Patron: Where do you guys have scanners?
Me: You have to check one out.
Patron: Are they not attached to the computers?
Me: No, so you have to check one out.
Patron: So you guys don't have them here?
Me: You can check one out.
Patron: Where do you guys have them?
Me: (getting frustrated) You have to check one out. Do you want to check one out?

Worst Part About Fasting on Non-Fast Sundays

I thought this was appropriate
I don't mind fasting on Fast Sundays because for some odd reason, I am never hungry. Also, it helps to think that everyone is fasting with you. HOWEVER! When you are fasting on any other days, all the forces combine to make you forget that you are fasting, think about food, or make you super hungry. Why stomach? Why!!!

Today is not different. I kept thinking about food and then I realize, 'Oh, I am fasting today.' Not the best feeling in the world. If it happens once or twice, that's fine, but if it happens more than that it starts to kill you from the inside (mostly from your stomach).

Your co-worker telling you that he turned on the water heater thing for hot chocolate definitely doesn't help either since you aren't drinking anything either. Having nothing to do at work but sit there and think about how hungry you are doesn't help either. Thinking about how you will spend 30 minutes of your lunch break thinking about how you are fasting doesn't help either.

I am not complaining. I promise. I am doing this because I want/need to. If I didn't, I would have broken my fast 10 minutes after I started it. I am telling you this because it is true. :)

Keep Digging, Buddy

You know, sometimes you feel great about life but you have this feeling that you are digging your own grave for some reason. If you ever have that kind of feeling, you are correct. You are digging your own grave.

Losing Yourself in the Service of God

I might cry as I type this.

Life is hard. All of us go through life with trials and adversities. Yesterday was my birthday and I had a great time; however, there still was a challenge that I just needed tell someone about. I complained to a good friend from my mission, and my companions and I reactivated her family. She and I talked to each other frequently and I would tell her what was happening in my life and she would tell me bits and pieces of her life. Well, when I complained to her, she texted me back and told me that we are in the "pit together" but she had more problems than I did. As soon as I found out what she was going through, I felt terrible and guilty that I just complained to her about something so small when she's going through so much crap (excuse my language but I don't know how else to say it other than "crap" or another word that could offend some people) and I knew that I didn't have time to feel sorry for myself at this point but do my best to help her. I can move on. I will survive. However, she was pretty much left with nothing.

I cried for her. I cried with her. We talked for hours while she was sitting in her car in front of a grocery store. I didn't know what to tell her. I prayed with her over the phone because she didn't want to pray. I talked about things I learned over the past few days, weeks, and months. I wanted to be there for her but I can't.

The worst part is when I didn't have answer to her question: "Why is everything happening to me?" What am I supposed to say? "God loves you. He knows you. He will help you out." She knew those answers and I knew she didn't want to hear them from me. At least, not now. I just listened to her and learned so much about her life and what she went through. What am I supposed to say? How am I supposed to help her?

Dear A., if you ever read this, know that you inspire me and teach me so much. This has been a learning and growing experience for me.

I would cry so much more when I think about what she's going through but I can't right now because I am at work. I hate that I am at work.

Prayers, Time, and Answers

"The Lord's timetable and our watches are not always synchronized." (T.G. Madsen)
"Consider Jacob’s virtual unawareness of time as he worked seven years for Rachel, as recorded in Genesis 29:20. “And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.” Beautiful! We mortals are so trapped in this dimension of time. It is not our natural element. We wear it like an ill-fitting suit of clothes, and we wish to hasten its passage on occasion. We also want to hold back the dawn on other occasions. We are not at home with time because we belong to eternity. In the moments when we are true and at our best, we have the experience of timelessness which Jacob had." (Neal A. Maxwell)

Those quotes are from my favorite blog  Every time I go to her blog, I see how much she is inspired by God and inspires me to hold on to my faith.

Everybody once in a while feels like God is slow to hear his/her prayers. A song that she quoted gives us hope and peace that He does listen and we should be grateful for that.
Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers
I am grateful that He listened to my prayer today and gave me such peace and comfort as I read this blog.

Low Expectations, Low Chance of Disappointment

Perhaps it's not the best philosophy to have but sometimes, it seems like that's the best solution. If you have high expectations, you will end up like this.

Birthday is a Giving Day

My mom, brother and I moved to the US about a year after my dad moved here. He was in Macomb, Illinois by himself for about a year. During this time, he had his birthday. Instead of telling other Korean students about it, he took them out to dinner and there, he told them that it was his birthday.

I still remember that story that one of those students told my family when we got there. I personally don't care about my own birthdays. I don't care if you throw me a party or give me gifts. Not a big deal. However, since I've been home from my mission, I have been trying to bake and/or cook on my birthday and invite people to come celebrate with me. I sometimes tell them that it's my birthday or baptism day to give them a very good reason to come but usually I just tell them to come and get some food.

I want them to know that I am so grateful that they are a part of my life and that they are wonderful friends. They make the difference in my life. It's like my birthday is to celebrate their friendship in my life rather than my existence. I wouldn't exist without them anyways.

I love my friends and family.

Merry Christmas,

Your favorite Asian.

Why I Love/Hate Fiction Books

I used to love reading fiction books until I came home from my mission. I decided that I want to read more gospel related books and learn deep doctrine stuff.

Recently (meaning two days ago), I decided to read some books over the break.

I love reading fiction books because I can imagine everything and anything however I want them to be. I can imagine what the characters look like, what the house looks like, how the scenery looks like, etc. I love doing that since I daydream about everything every day.

I hate reading fiction books because I get so emotional involved. I get really frustrated if things don't work out. I get so mad at characters who are jerks. I get really emotional if sad things happen. Oh, did I say that I get really mad at at characters? I got so annoyed whenever I read Keith Clayton's part of The Lucky One because he is a kind of a guy who thinks girls are materials, not humans with feelings. I got so mad and annoyed every time I read about what he thought of women. I hate guys like him.

Anyways, that's pretty much why I like reading fiction books. I am excited to read books!

Christmas Break!!!!

I think I am trying to catch up on blogging that I haven't done this month because sadly, I haven't posted whole lot this month. Now, I got all the time in the world to do whatever except I will be working a lot. It's OK though because even though I say "work," it's really sitting in front of a computer either reading a book or blogging until someone comes up to the desk to ask a question: that rarely happens. It's the break; no one wants to come to the library except those who don't have a computer or a printer at home.

How am I going to spend my break? I checked out a book (if you read the earlier post, you will know which book I checked out) about two days ago and just finished it about 20 minutes ago. Ten minutes ago, I checked out three more books by Nicholas Sparks: The Notebook, Message in a Bottle and Dear John. I have never seen the movies. I heard about Nicholas Sparks from my roommate and I was very interested in The Lucky One. Loved the book. I am not sure if I am excited about the movie though but it doesn't matter since it's PG-13 (for those who didn't know, I stopped watching PG-13 movies about three months ago). I am not planning on watching movies for these books because I might get really disappointed.

My goal for this Christmas break is to read as many books as I can. What are your plans?

Oh, my birthday is during the Christmas break too. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Is It Christmas?

"[A] Simple Truth"

While I was reading "The Lucky One," there was a quote that I really liked that I would like to share. One of the main characters said,
"...sometimes the most ordinary things could be made extraordinary, simply by doing them with the right people."
I am just going to leave it at that.

God Lets Me Cheat

While you are taking a test, you see faint circles around the answers because a person who took the test before you decided to write on the test form and erased the circles but you can definitely see them. What would you do?

I tried hard not looking at the answers but as it turns out, this person chose the same answers as I did except few that had stars next to them because he/she had to ponder before picking the answer. I thought to myself, 'If God didn't want me to get help from someone, He wouldn't have let me have this test form.' Don't worry. I did read the questions and the answers before checking my answers with the God-given test form. I didn't agree with few answers though.

I had to put this up because it was for Psychology and we were tested on inkblots

At the end of the test, there was another faint mark: 58/65. What did I get on the test? 58 out of 65. It was not because of that test form but it was very weird.

Happy Finals Week!

Friendship

I've been thinking about people who used to be my friends but not anymore. I am to blame for sure because it's usually my fault that we stopped talking to each other. I am an idiot but I am not a jerk. Things I say come out because I don't think about things and don't think about the consequences. All the friends I lost over the years were really great friends. They were there for me and helped me out when I needed them.

Recently, I lost a friendship of someone who was a great friend to me, but alas, I was an idiot. I shouldn't have tested our friendship. I haven't talked to this friend for over a month. I wish to tell my friend how sorry I am but I do not know how or what to say. I am afraid that this friendship won't get restored.

On the contrary, I am very grateful for friends that I have who make me appreciate what I have in my life. Few days ago, I was depressed as soon as I woke up. I was talking to my friend who asked me why I was grateful for God. I am grateful that he made me think about positive things in my life rather than looking at the bad things.

I love all my friends. I miss all the friends I lost.

Merry Christmas, everyone. Cherish your friends and let them know how much you love them. Don't ever lose them...

What Does Religion Have to Do With Anything?

So I was reading some articles on CNN.com and decided to find out what was happening with 2012 election. I read this article about Mitt Romney. I didn't read it all because it wasn't that interesting but what bothered me the most were the comments that people made. People kept talking about his religion and how he doesn't live his religion, practices polygamy, and so on. I thought, "What does that really have to do with anything?" People thought it was the worst idea to vote for John F. Kennedy because he was a Roman Catholic but he was great and even was assassinated. Do we talk about how he was a Roman Catholic now? No, because no one gives a...you get the point. Why do people have to bring up Mitt Romney's religion? Why not bring up other candidates' religions? I think it's very much true that there still are tons of opposition from the society when it comes to Mormonism.

Honestly, I am not a big fan of Mitt Romney. I don't care much about him even though he is a Mormon. I actually don't think it's right for Mormons to vote for him just because he is a Mormon. However, I don't approve of people bringing other people down because of their religions. Grow up!

You say freedom of religion. I say you are full of...it! You can tell how mad I am by counting how many times I replace(d) a swear word with ...'s. You Americans (not all of you) are liars who contradict your own Bill of Rights and philosophies. Everyone is equal? My ...butt! Just like you don't approve of Mormonism, you don't even think that it is wrong to stereotype other races. (I can really go into that too but I won't.)

That was my soapbox for the day.

I Work at a Zoo Called "Library" Part 9

This girl comes to the desk with much frustration.

Patron: Your staplers don't work!
Me: Are they out of staples?
Patron: I don't know! They just don't work! (Sees a stapler on our shelf) Can I use that?
Me: Sure.
(At this point, I was trying to find some staples to put in the staplers so I didn't see what she was doing.)
Patron: (more frustrated) This doesn't work either! (storms off)

(Now, I thought that the other one was out of staples so I opened it up to put some more but realized that there were plenty of staples. I realized that a staple was sticking out half way at the end of the stapler, where staples come out, so I decided that she didn't press hard enough. When I got more staples and went to the table with the staplers, they were all in the same state as the one at the desk: staples sticking out half way. All the staplers were full of staples. She didn't press hard enough for them to actually staple her paper. Who's stupid now?)

"I Wasn't Born Here!" Pt 3

I love it when people who were born here come to me to either check their papers or ask me how to spell "completely." I had a guy come up to me last Saturday and he asked me to read over his paper to make sure everything looks good. Later I found out that he was sending this paper to Japanese government for an English teaching job there. OK, if you would think that his English would be pretty good because he will be teaching it to Japanese, you are wrong. His paper was terrible in a way that the paragraphs he wrote were so short and very choppy. I didn't say anything to him about it but I just couldn't help thinking that even I could write a better paper than that. Also, his paper did not sound professional at all because the way he wrote the sentences with the words he chose sounded like he was still in high school. Didn't he take English 150? I mean, when I write anything that is as important as his paper for this job, I always have a different tone of voice than when I am blogging about people who can't write. Am I wrong?

Dude, I don't know how your paper stinks so much when I, who wasn't born here, can write something that is so much better than that.

And yes, I had someone come to me and asked me how you spell "completely" about an hour ago. If it was something like "onomatopoeia," I would have told her to look it up online or have butchered it, but "completely"? Are you serious?

Dude, I even know how to spell that even though I wasn't born here.
