Koreans in the Library

You should watch this first.

And then watch this (Warning! It's might be a little bit vulgar).

My Point is that I know when Koreans are in the library because I can hear their voices from some odd places in the library and I understand what they are saying. Funny thing is that right now, there are two Koreans at the Help Desk working on something on a laptop. It's just funny that they are super loud! I know it's not that they are trying to speak loud but that's just how they talk (refer to the second video). They are not saying anything bad about white people so don't worry. However, they are really really loud compared to other people here at the library. Pretty funny, I think.

You Won't Get It Unless You Grew Up Korean

This is the funniest blog about what it's like to grow up Korean. My brother can relate to it so much too. I love the comments about it.

A typical Korean family.
To add to the blog, you know you grew up Korean if you slept on the floor or only had mattresses on the floor. You know you grew up Korean if you sat on the floor when you had guests over. You know you grew up Korean if you recall all the tools your parents used to beat you up (we had a broken pool cue stick). You know you grew up Korean if you ate anything that your parents tell you is good for you. You know you grew up Korean if your pet dogs kept getting "stolen" and then you realize later that perhaps, they became a part of your parents or even you.

My Flirting Skills

I am trying to write as many posts as I can tonight.

You might be wondering what this post is all about. It's exactly as the title says; my flirting skills.

I don't believe that I have any skills at flirting because I am pretty much an open book. If you ask me anything, I will tell you, or I might tell you anything without you asking even things that you don't care to know at all. If that's what you call my flirting skills then I guess it is.

However, if I do flirt and you think I am flirting with you, I really have no clue that I am flirting. I don't flirt knowing that I am flirting. Perhaps, I do it without myself knowing that I am actually flirting (I seem to do a lot of things without knowing/being aware that I am doing them). Maybe I flirt by teasing... Hmm, I don't think that's a very good way to flirt since I don't like it too much when other people tease me.

Oh, just to let everyone know. I may be an idiot/moron but I am not a jerk. If I say something that offends you, I didn't mean it to be mean but I am just really dumb.

Smiley Kyoo

This girl is the cutest Korean girl ever!
I've known this for a while but it's always good to remind myself of this great and wonderful trait that God gave me.

I smile and laugh a lot.

I don't know if any of you noticed that but I do that. It's not because I am laughing at you nor I think something is really funny nor I am happy all the time. I honestly don't know why but I just do. Maybe just like what my friend, K., said if you squint your eyes, it seems like everything is better (you might have to say it again so I can quote you correctly, K.).

Anyhoosers, I just grew up smiling at everything and laughing at everything. It doesn't matter how un-funny it may be, I still smile. I know it's a gift because no one seems to mind the fact that I do this (if you do mind, you better tell me so I wouldn't smile or laugh in front of you).

PS: Oh, did everyone realize how I put a period after parenthesis? That's APA style for you.
PPS: If you want to look up more pictures of that cute Korean girl, Google 붕어빵 민하. That's Korean so just copy and paste.

Philosophy

You know what the problem is with Philosophy? No one knows what you are talking about. The worst part of it all is that you don't even know what your own philosophy is talking about.

In my mind, philosophy is like the picture on the left. It makes sense but it doesn't make any sense. It makes sense in your mind what is going on but it doesn't make sense in a way that it's impossible for it to occur like that. Philosophy also makes sense that it could work but at the same time, you don't know if it would actually work.

For my philosophy research paper, I was writing about synthetic a priori knowledge. If you don't know what that is, it basically means that you gain knowledge through innate ideas and that the predicate gives new information about the subject. An example of synthetic is "All bachelors are happy." That can be true or that can't be true. If you were to say, "All bachelors are unmarried," that doesn't give you new information about bachelors because "bachelor" means that a man is not married. An example of a priori is time because you can't gain knowledge of time through sense experiences. You know that time exists because you have innate ideas of time (or that's what Kant believed). Now that you are thoroughly confused, I will tell you what I was writing about. Just kidding. I won't tell you what I was writing about but I was really confused when I suggested a new way of proving the existence of synthetic a priori propositions. I knew it made sense but I couldn't wrap my head around it so I read it over and over again. Even after reading it so many times, I still wasn't able to wrap my head around it so I decided to leave it alone because I knew it made sense. I couldn't understand my own logic! I felt really dumb after that.

I've Been to China Before

So I haven't told you about this before, I will explain this to you.

I was at the temple months ago and this elderly man came up to me and started asking me questions.
Man: Where are you from?
Me: Illinois.
Man: Where are your parents from?
Me: South Korea.
Man: That's great! I've been to China before.
Me:...That's...cool.

The reason why I tell you this story is because it happened again just now. A man came to the help desk where I am working looking for volumes of books. As I was helping him, he asked:
Man: Where are you from?
Me: Illinois.
Man: Oh, I've been to China before. That's why I ask.
Me:...Cool. (Changing the subject) So the book you are looking for...

Yep...

Morning Person

I am definitely a morning person. Recently, my body decided that I can live off of 6-7 hours of sleep. This morning I woke up at 5 when my alarm was set for 6:30. I just decided to get ready and came to the library to work on some stuff. I got so much done until I started working. I can't even focus anymore when I am reading something. Maybe it's the fact that I am working and hungry but my mind feels so much clear when I just woke up.

I like waking up early in the morning because I feel like it gives me more time to do things throughout the day. I hate waking up late and feeling like the day is almost over.

True Thoughts Part 5

Before you read this, I really want you to read it as it is without any judgments because it's my thoughts and the intro to this post is straight from my journal (so you know how legit these thoughts are). Oh, also, you are going to read some really deep and honest thoughts so be prepared for that. (Don't worry, I go through this phase time to time. You will know what I am talking about.)

An excerpt from Friday, March 16, 2012.
"While I was at the library in the evening, I had this thought that it is sad to know that there are so many women who don't get a chance to be married. How lonely they must feel! How worthless they must feel! I feel lonely and worthless now so I understand a little bit of how they feel but think  about how all these beautiful daughters of God would feel! how would you feel if your own daughter doesn't get asked out on dates and she feels so [depressed and] lonely? It would break [your] heart. It breaks my heart to think that daughters of God don't know their beauty and worth..."
I am not saying that all the girls don't recognize that they are daughters of God and that they are beautiful, but I am saying that at times, they do feel lonely and depressed. Of course, you can argue that your worth and beauty do not depend by the external world, but the truth is that whatever your opinion of this might be, it's still true that the external world influence how you view yourself and how you feel.

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, young men are frequently asked/commanded/forced to go on dates. It is true that young men learn different skills as they date, learn about themselves, and find out the types of girls they would like to get to know better. However, I believe, on top of those three reasons, that they are asked to go on dates because there are too many young women who don't get asked out on dates. I do not wish to make it sound like women are weak and can't find dates or don't have capacity to go on dates with their own way; however, the social norm constrains women from asking guys out (not that they can't but it still doesn't feel right to many people, both men and women, which I think is sad). *(One more thing: even if I only talk about one side of views, it doesn't mean that I don't believe in the other side of views.)

I just thought this was appropriate.
They are dates if you are wondering.
Why do general authorities keep telling young men to go on dates? I believe that they do so because they understand that there are so many young women who don't get to go on dates, because they understand that young women feel so worthless and sad that guys are not interested in them (or they think guys are not interested in them), and because they feel God's love for them.

If you, (young) men, still don't understand this or this doesn't seem to have any impact on you, imagine your sister (if you don't have a sister, imagine your future daughter) coming home with a sad countenance. She tells you how worthless she feels because she never gets asked out on dates and that guys are not interested in her. She starts to have low self-esteem and is dissatisfied with her body image. What would you tell her? You would comfort her and encourage her. You would be sad to see her like this. It's not about money. It's not about time. It's not about you (all the time).

It obviously took me a very, very long time to realize this but I hope not all of you would have to.

Drawing On The Powers Of Heaven

You really have to read this book! It's a small book with less than 100 pages but you can learn so much about faith and being committed.

I got this book about a year ago and I am reading it again for the second time because I decided that I need to strengthen my faith.

For one thing, I need to think about what I desire. I need to know if my desires are righteous or not because if they are not, there is no way that the Lord will help me realize those desires.

Second, I need to change some things in my life so that I am more in tuned with the Spirit and will be worthy to draw on the powers of Heaven. I decided that I will try to be nice to everyone, even at work (this will be really hard for me). I just tried this past few minutes and there is a huge change in myself. I do enjoy what I do and I love doing everything for patrons! I am definitely happier.

The book talks about how you should set goals that you know it would be hard to do but relying on the Lord will help you accomplish them. It exercises your faith and makes you draw on the powers of Heaven to accomplish your goals.

Overall, one of the greatest book ever! I highly, very highly, recommend you read it.

I Work at a Zoo Called "Library" Part 18

I was helping this girl with printing.
Patron: How do you say your name?
Me: Kyoo (Q).
Patron: What does it mean?
Me: ...it doesn't mean anything.

(What I should have said.)
Me: It's my name.

(OR)
Me: What is your name?
Patron: (Name)
Me: What does that mean? Do you feel stupid now?

Light Casts Away Darkness

I work at 7 in the morning every Thursday. Today was not an exception. As I looked out the window time to time, I could see that it was getting brighter and brighter outside. The Sun was coming up.

It takes a while for the Sun to come up. It will be dark for hours and then when the Sun starts to come up, you can see the change in the world. You start to see trees clearly. You see where you are walking. You can see far away. The darkness disappears.

Just like the picture above, the light casts away the darkness and it will be bright for a long time but the darkness always comes back. However, we can have hope that the Sun will come back again.
"...He knew that the dark veil of unbelief was being cast away from his mind, and the light which did light up his mind, which was the light of the glory of God, which was a marvelous light of his goodness—yea, this light had infused such joy into his soul, the cloud of darkness having been dispelled, and that the light of everlasting life was lit up in his soul..." -Alma 19:6-
The time will come in each of our lives when the Sun will come up, and we will see once again what is around us and where we are headed.

I Work at a Zoo Called "Library" Part 17

A patron comes to the desk and asks for a guest login.
Me: Do you have some sort of a picture ID with you?
Patron: No, but I have my phone.
Me: I just need to see some sort of a picture ID.
(Patron takes out her phone and shows me pictures of her)
Patron: This one is me and my bird...
Me: That's not a picture ID. (I decide to create a guest login anyways)
(We are in the process of creating a guest login)
Patron: You know what? I realized that I am missing my wallet. I know I came in here with my wallet but I don't have it anymore. Let me go find it. (She leaves)
Me: ...all righty.

_________________________________________________________________________________
This was a chat I got.

Patron: I am looking for a few things but in general anything credible on the electoral college
Patron: its pros and cons, alternatives, etc
Me: OK. Go to the library website.
Me: There is a small box for databases.
Me: Either click "O" or search for "Opposing Viewpoints."
Me: What you want to use is "Opposing Viewpoints in Context (Gale)."
Patron: i have tried that actually but the articles were really hard to understand.
(A little later.)

Patron: and how do I know what to look up because for example, I just looked up electoral process and I get things about Africa. I want to focus on the US
Me: Did you search for Electoral College?
Patron: i did and those were the articles I didn't understand :(

(A little later.)
Patron: how can I effectively skim?

You must be this (smart) to be in college...

My Existence

"Cogito ergo sum." -René Descartes-
Many of you probably don't know what that means but if you know who René Descartes is, you might be able to figure out that that says. It says, "I think, therefore I am."

"The thought 'I exist' cannot but be true when I think it; but I cannot doubt it without thinking of it. Hence, it is not only true but indubitable, because whenever I try to doubt it I see its truth." -Descartes-

I always (meaning since I took History of Psychology) thought that my existence can only exist by me. Hence, "I think, therefore I am." I exist because I think. A person cannot exist without wondering who he/she is and when he/she does think, the existence of that person becomes real. (I realize that this is a very controversial topic but just go along with me for the time being.)

Now, I think that that is a sad statement. If you only exist because you think, you are all by yourself. Even though I might believe that philosophy is true, I rather exist because someone else can see me, can touch me, cares for me, and loves me. Like a tree in the middle of a forest; if it falls and there is no one to hear it, is there a sound? No, because sound is perception and without someone to perceive the sound, there is no sound. It's the same for one's existence; if there is no one to perceive you, do you really exist? What kind of existence would you have if you are the only person who knows you exist? I think that's what I wanted for the longest time: someone who can validate my existence.

My Heavenly Father Loves Me Part 4

I love every opportunity I get to serve others. Last week, I was just at the right place at the right time to help one of my friends. She just needed a ride to a store and she's been calling everyone to see if anyone could take her (she didn't call me though). I just decided that I was going to go over to her apartment to hang out and as soon as she opened the door, she freaked me out with really desperate cry of "Kyoo, what are you doing right now?" I had to move away from the door because I didn't know what she would have done to me. Anyways, I was able to give her a ride. I don't think I was inspired or anything but I am glad I was able to help her out.

For an assignment in my New Testament class, I have to pray for opportunities to serve others for two weeks. I think it's a really awesome assignment since I don't really pray for that. Also, it will help me really listen to the Spirit and recognize simple promptings.

I love that I am considered worthy to help others.

Think, Kyoo. Think.

I like this picture a lot! It's so my major.
I haven't been able to come up with anything to write on my blog. It's kind of annoying that I am losing my creativity. I can tell by looking at my journal also; it only took me four months to go through my last journal and I even wrote two lines per ruled line so I wrote a lot every day, but now, I write a line per line but I am still on page 60-ish after two and half months of having it. That's not very good.

So what now? I guess I will just keep thinking. Thinking about thinking (metacognition) is what I do best.

True Thoughts Part 4

Have you ever felt like you are supposed to do something and when you start doing it, you are too focused on it that you feel overwhelmed?

I know I am supposed to do something but I might be too (I am still trying to find a word to describe what I am doing) focused (not the exact word I am looking for). It's like I know I am supposed to dig ground to find something but I am going too fast that either I would get blisters or I would break a shovel. I feel like if I keep going so fast, I might blow it. However, if I don't go fast enough, I might lose it.

What Makes Me Mad Part 4

This came about fast!

Clinical Psychology paper due March 30th. (5-10 pages)
Philosophy paper due April 3rd. (4-8? pages)
Abnormal Psychology paper due April 5th. (10?-12? pages)

No time to procrastinate. You know what people say, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." I want to change that to "How do you eat elephants? One bite at a time until you are full. Rest. One more bite at a time."

No, I don't eat elephants.

What Makes Me Mad Part 3

1. A Surprise Test
I just found out today (Thursday) that I have a test in my Abnormal Psychology class starting tomorrow to next Monday. That's three days to take the test and I haven't studied for it at all. I will have to take it on Monday but on Monday, the only time I can take is after 6:30 pm because I will be busy all day with classes and work, which means I won't get home until well past 8:00. Not my kind of a day.

2. Two Tests On The Same Week
I also just found out that I have a test in my Philosophy class and a test in the New Testament class on the same week. It means I will have to study for the philosophy test and take it on Friday, and get a study group formed for the New Testament class on Thursday to fill out the study guide we will have and then take the test on Monday or Tuesday. Honestly, I am not too worried about the New Testament test since it took me 14 minutes last time and I got a 97%. What I am complaining about is that it's too much stress!

3. On Top of That!
On top of all this, I have two big projects due the end of March and the beginning of April. Two weeks of March will be gone when I am done with these tests then I will only have two weeks, or a week and half, to work on these two projects. I hate my life!

Yes, now I am starting to freak out this semester.
