I Work at a Zoo Called "Library" Part 13

This is the best part about working late. I receive blessings even from patrons.

Patron: Hey! What room number is the MultiMedia LAb?
Patron: Multi-Media Lab*
Me: It is room number 4826.
Patron: Thank you! May you have many beautiful children.
Me: haha Thank you.

This is the worst thing about working late...

This African middle-aged woman came to the desk and had some Word questions. Well, it turns out that I did her homework.
She had this paper with instructions on what she needed to change on a document that she already had. She had the worst breath ever, and whenever I told her what she needed to do, she kept saying, "That sucks." I kind of wanted to tell her to stop saying that but I didn't. Whenever I finished explaining something to her, she would point one of the instructions and would ask, "How do you do this one?" Yes, I started to get really annoyed but her breath made me more irritated than anything.
I should have told her that I couldn't help her with her homework since that's cheating but I just wanted her out of here.

"Feast Upon the Words of Christ"

On Sunday, one of the speakers used this scripture in 2 Nephi 32:3
"...feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do."
That scripture woke me up spiritually and realized that that's where I will find answers to my prayers. This morning after I finished my daily scripture study, I decided to look up some scriptures for guidance. I prayed, and started to read some pages in the Book of Mormon. The scripture that caught my attention was Alma 32:41. In Alma chapter 32, Alma compares faith to a seed. In verse 41, he said:
"...by your faith with great diligence, and with patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree springing up unto everlasting life." (Emphasis added)
The reason why I underlined faith, diligence, patience, and looking forward is because I felt like those four things are what I need in order for the "seed" to take root. My "seed" is not faith or knowledge, but life-long goals that I have had for a long time.
"My job now is to find ways to develop and cultivate them." (An excerpt from Monday, January 16, 2012 entry)

"It's Better To Look Up"

An excerpt from Thursday, January 12, 2011 entry:
"When I was walking to a class, there were people on top of JFSB singing and holding up a sign. It said, "it's better to look up." It's true and I often do; however, encountering them made me think about what I see when I look up: sky, stars, trees...creations of God. I am not bound by the complexity of [the] world around me but pure creations of God that [are] so simple. Perhaps, that is why I look up; I am tired of being bound by what's going on around me and I get caught in the middle of it."
 Why do you look up?

"What Do You Want To Be?" vs. "What Do You Want To Do?"

As a boy, when people asked me what I wanted to be, I told them a teacher, a police officer, a doctor, etc. Of course, it changed as years went by. However, as years went by, people's questions changed also: "What do you want to do?"

I bet you will hardly ever hear people asking you, "What do you want to be?" They ask about your major then ask you what you want to do with it. How come it changes as you get older? Somehow, it's not about becoming someone but doing something.

There are two concepts I can think of to talk about this.
1. When you become something, you enjoy what you are doing. It becomes a part of your life and you let it influence you on what you do. When you are a student, there are so many things that you are involved with such as classes, social life, college activities, etc; however, when you are studying a major, it almost feels like  you are an outsider.
I know it's a really confusing concept but let me put it this way. If you are "being," you are an insider of that field/paradigm but if you are "doing," you are an outsider trying to learn what is inside. If that doesn't make any sense, I am sorry. You try to figure it out and let me know.

2. In the gospel way of thinking about it is the easiest way for me. We are all trying to be like Christ and there are, of course, things we can do to become like Him. However, when you are doing things, are you becoming or are you simply doing? To me, becoming like Him means that we get rid of who we were before and make His attributes become ours. Let me put it this way: do you have to remind yourself to be nice to people or are you just nice to people? If you have to remind yourself, you are doing. If you are generally nice to people, you are becoming. I am not condemning people who are still doing/trying because I believe that you can make those things as  your characteristics; however, if you are not making them into a part of you, you are only doing.

Now, let me ask you which would be more appropriate question to ask: "what do you want to be?" or "what do you want to do?" I say both. However, it depends on how you answer. Many Christians would say, "I want to become like Christ." Very true. I won't argue with that because that's my goal also. However, I would add another answer for myself: "I want to be loved."

It's up to you how you answer these questions. You can be funny and witty about them or you can be totally serious. However, maybe you should take your time and think about what it means to you to be someone and do something with your life.

"How Are You?"

Before I start, I want you to read the whole thing before you disagree with me or get mad at me.

My least favorite question could be "how are you?" I ask all of you, "Why? Why do you ask people how they are doing?" If you really think about it, it's out of courtesy but not necessarily because you really, genuinely want to know how that person is doing. Do you really care how I am doing? Then ask me why my day is good or bad or say, "I'll live." If you don't care how I am doing, just say, "Hey." I hate that question more when some random person asks me that because he/she doesn't know me and certainly does not care how I am doing. Sometimes I want to say, "It's none of your business." Yes, it might be harsh and mean but I feel like you are being a jerk by asking me how I am doing when you don't really care.

One more phrase I don't like is "I am sorry." Whenever I told people that I wasn't going home for Christmas, they told me that they were sorry. Why? I chose not to go home. You should have been happy for me that I wasn't going home. Also, if you are really sorry, I feel like you should ask what you can do for that person and try to cheer that person up. I had to say I am sorry few times to one of my really good friends (and you should have read about her on one of the previous posts) but I also told her that I wish I could be there with her to somehow help her out. I told her that if she ever needed money, she should let me know. I think that's what it really means to be "sorry"; you are willing to do whatever to ease the burden of your friend. You wish you could take their pain away. You want to bear their burdens for them. If you don't ever wish those things, you are not really sorry.
Also, sometimes people just don't want to hear "sorry" at all. I was talking to my co-worker and she told me about something that was going on in her family. I didn't know what to say but I didn't say sorry, then she told me how she was sick of people saying "sorry." I would never want to hear "I am sorry" when something really terrible happens to me because "I am sorry" is not going to cheer me up.

Having said all this, I must tell you that I kind of have changed my view on "how are you?" part. It is true that on most of the days, I feel like my life sucks (I probably don't use the word "suck" except talking about life) and I hesitate to say "good." However, perhaps I should say "good" for me so that I can change my attitude of life: it could be good if I wanted it to be. I tried to be optimistic and encouraging by telling myself in the mirror that I am going to have a great day. It worked most of the times. It could be the same with life; if I kept convincing others that my life is good, perhaps I could make it good (or I am just faking it). I think I will just go with "I'll live."

I Work at a Zoo Called "Library" Part 12

Definitely a freshman...
I go over how to put money on his card and how to print with him. There was a guy who was printing so I pointed at this dude to show the patron that he needs to swipe his card to print.
He finally puts money on his card and comes back.
Patron: So now do I print first or do I use my card over there? (pointing at the printers)
Me: You need to print first.
Patron: Oh, OK. (walks away) (comes back few minutes later) So now do they print over there? (pointing at the printers again)
Me: Yes.
(The patron waits around the printers)
Me: You need to swipe your card to print.
Patron: Oh, OK. Thanks. (he swipes his card)
Me: The other way.
Patron: Oh, OK. (he turns his card and swipes again)
Me: Now you can press "print."

Another story...not really a story but it's pretty ridiculous.
There is a guy using one of the public access computers and he has earplugs into his ears. Whenever there is a person talking on the phone, he shoves his earplugs deeper into his ears. Wow... Just wow...

Yes, I just did that

I Work at a Zoo Called "Library" Part 11

This freshman with super bad runny nose comes to the desk and asks, "How do you print?" I told him the process for few seconds but interrupts me, "It doesn't work. Nothing works!" As he goes on for another minute about how he couldn't print and so on, all I could think about was that he didn't sound very educated at all. I wanted to tell him to wipe his nose first before continuing but I didn't tell him that.

He finally says something about having to have money on your card to print and complains about not being able to just print with his money. I tell him that he can put money on his card to print but he says, "Yeah, but the assignment was due 20 minutes ago!" OK dude, why the heck are you here complaining then? I could see a girl on a computer behind him just laughing and I couldn't help but kind of laugh. I finally tell him that it's not a big deal and that he should just talk to his professor and she will understand.

I love patrons with runny nose.

On a different note, I realized that I am consumed by my job. The way I answer people's questions about books and research is based on the library databases. For example, few weeks ago, my roommate asked me if I had the Hunger Games (or a question like that) and I told him that the library has them but they are all checked out. He definitely didn't ask me if the library had them. I work at the library way too much.

You know you work at a library when you answer people's questions with services that the library provides.

One day, I will try this

Shopaholic Me

I might be shopaholic because I just bought a pair of shoes and jeans but they were only $55 total with tax and free shipping! I couldn't resist it! Only $55 on my credit card. That's not bad. I worked hard during the break so I deserve a little bit of joy, right?
Thanks, M. and A. for "encouraging" me to buy both.
Yes, I am justifying myself.

I Lack Inspiration

It has been hard months without any amazing inspirations to help me write. Let me talk about some cool things or just things that happened to me.

MTC district reunion
My MTC district was really close. We wrote letters to each other while we were out in the mission field and kept in contact with each other even after. On Jan 2, we decided to have another reunion because one of the sisters in the district was going to be in town with her husband. Even though not everyone could come, it was still awesome to catch up on how everyone was doing.

The first day of school
It's always fun to meet your friends on campus again after the break. I met some friends from back home and it was like meeting one after another. While I was talking to B., we saw L. who I haven't seen since...I left on my mission. After she left, we saw J. Pretty cool for a first day in school.

New Year
I don't set New Year's resolutions because I won't remember after a while, but I am hoping to set short-term goals as time passes throughout this year. I have already updated my music list by deleting some music that I don't listen to anymore. It's not that they are bad or anything but my taste in music changed. (I am actually planning on posting about all the music that I have along with a picture of each band/artist.) Also, I am hoping that I will get some answers to my life-long prayers this year.
