Uncertainty

Uncertainty. It's something that is not pleasing at all. Why? Because you do not know. Not knowing gives you fear. Fear overtakes faith.

Right now, my life is full of uncertainties. I don't know what's going to happen after I graduate in 7 weeks or so. I don't know what I am doing with my personal life.

I guess it doesn't make me depressed but it worries me. Meta-worry (worrying about worrying) kills me also. I am worried that I am worrying about all these uncertainties.

These uncertainties might come from me more than anyone else. I am not confident with myself. I feel like I am not good enough. I don't have high self-esteem or self-confident. Sometimes I feel like it's easier for me to give up on everything because I feel like there is no point in trying when I know (I think I know) that nothing is going to work out. That's why before, I wanted to just drop everything and move to Africa where there are less expectations.

I don't have a solution. I have no clue what is expected of me from God. If I have uncertainties and if I start to get worried about these uncertainties, I am lacking faith for sure. I am not going to lie that I know I am lacking faith right now. I want to be strong. I want to exercise my faith but I don't know what to do. I don't know anything. All I know is that God knows me and loves me. I know that the Savior died for me. I know the truthfulness of the gospel but I don't know or am not sure about anything else.

What am I to do?

Persistence of Vision

Persistence of vision is "the phenomenon that produces the illusion of movement when viewing motion pictures."

When you think about the image above, there are multiple shots of a person riding a horse. If you were to turn that into a film, you would see the person on a horse moving.

Life is like this: we are in motion all the time; however, we are still in the moment. Let me clarify it. We are so busy moving, acting, doing things that we forget to stop and think about what's going on right now. We forget to be happy now as Elder Uchtdorf stated.
"The happiest people I know are not those who find their golden ticket; they are those who, while in pursuit of worthy goals, discover and treasure the beauty and sweetness of the everyday moments. They are the ones who, thread by daily thread, weave a tapestry of gratitude and wonder throughout their lives."
We shouldn't just go through life without enjoying what is around us right now. Don't miss out on what is around you.

My Heavenly Father Loves Me Part 10

Recently, I have been kind of down. I was sick. I wasn't sure about the future. I thought about dropping everything and move to Africa and join a tribe. I wasn't sure about my full potential. I felt lonely because I felt like I was the only one suffering. I felt like I was worthless.

Today, I want to testify that God, my Father in Heaven, knows me (and you). He loves me. He cares. He knows what I need to hear.

I can finally say that I love BYU (Brigham Young University) because even in a secular class, I can learn gospel principles. In a secular institution, I can feel the Spirit. In what other educational institutions in the world (except other Church institutions) could you feel the Spirit, learn gospel principles, and receive personal revelations?

I want to tell you the principle that I have learned in my class today: everyone is a sinner. Whether it be your parents, your bishop, your stake president, or the prophet of our Church, we are all sinners. That gave me comfort. That gave me peace. I am not alone in this journey of mortal life. Everyone is suffering. Everyone is trying to be more like Christ. Everyone fails time to time but we are all trying to become better.

God knows my potential. He knows who and what I can become. He is continually refining me. If I weren't at work but at home, I would be bawling my eyes out right now because I am so grateful for God's mercy and Christ's grace that strengthen me.

My Heavenly Father loves me and I have no doubt about that.

Remembering Blessings

There has been something I've been thinking about.

When I was baptized, there were so many people who helped my family out and fellowshipped us. They were always there when we needed help and continued to be our friends even until now. I made tons of friends because everyone talked to me and were kind to me.

Even though such experiences helped to become who I am today, I became too comfortable in the Church that I forget to extend this fellowship to others. I feel so guilty of accepting this blessing but not sharing it with others.

There are always people who need fellowship in the Church or just need friends. Why would I not talk to them? Because I lack courage. Because I fear. I do not fear what others might think of me if I talked to them. Then what am I afraid of? I don't know. However, whatever it may be, I need to overcome it with charity, the pure love of Christ. If I truly loved God's children, I would always try to lift them up.

Faith and Trials

It's been a while since I have written. I actually should even be blogging because I should be studying for a test; however, I was thinking about one of my friends whose family is going through some really rough time. It involves cancer.

It is tough (and the word "tough" is not strong enough to describe this kind of a situation) when the concept of death is close in your life. It's hard to accept that someone so close to you and someone whom you love so dearly could leave you in this mortal life.

We understand that we should have faith in Jesus Christ and in His Atonement. We know that through faith, all things can be accomplish. We know that faith is what motivates us to do good. However, when trials come in our lives, we waiver and start to doubt.

People always tell us to have faith when trials come. However, they don't explain why we should have faith. They don't explain how faith could help us. I do not claim to understand faith 100%. However, I do believe that faith is essential in our lives and especially when we are going through trials. If there is anything you take away from reading this, it should be this: FAITH DOES NOT MAKE TRIALS GO AWAY OR MAKE THEM EASY; IT STRENGTHENS US SO THAT WE CAN BEAR THEM AND MOVE FORWARD.

Faith has effects on US, not trials or tribulations. Why? When we have faith; we trust God, we believe in Christ, we believe Christ, we believe in the Atonement, and we believe in the Plan of God. We know that life moves on. Even when a person passes on, it's not the end of life, of us, nor of that person. Life moves on. We move on (but we still keep that person alive in us). The deceased moves on to the next life and waits for that happy moment to receive a perfect body and to stand before God the Father to be judged. It is not the end. Knowing this and believing in this gives us faith. And somehow, by God's power, trials don't seem so bad anymore. They seem so easy to us. They seem so bearable.

What Is Truly Important?

If you go to BYU and come to the library often, you would have seen an African guy going around talking to random girls. I was very annoyed by his behaviors for a long time and finally, I went up to the guy and talked to him.

He usually goes up to girls and strikes up a conversation about dating in the US or how he needs advice on dating. Last night, he asked the wife of one of my best friends how he could break up with his current girlfriend then started talking about how there is racism in the Church and what not. So I went up to him and told him to cut it out but my friend's wife assured me that she was all right. This dude told me that he would talk to me after. So after I got off work, I talked to him for an hour.

Before I tell you things we talked about and things I analyzed, I want to tell you the outline of my analysis. First, I want to try to tell you what he told me of his background and where he was coming from. Then I am going to tell you what I think about things he told me. Last of all, I will tell you what I think is wrong with what he is doing. I will also try my best to remember what he said.

He told me that he served his mission in Michigan. He is active in the Church. What he is trying to do is raise awareness of racism in the Church. He had many relationships that ended because of the issue of racism. He said that he is currently dating a girl whose parents do not approve of the relationship because he is black and he claims that his stake president told him not to date this girl. He was talking to my friend's wife to figure out how to break up with the girl. He assured me that he talks to girls because he needs advice and that the topic of racism comes up to explain where he is coming from.
He also stated that racism in the Church is serious and that there were three black professors who got fired because they taught about racism in the Church. When I asked him why he takes so much time to talk about these things, he told me that because people are interested in it. Because people ask questions. When I told him that he could change people's perspective through actions rather than words, he told me a story about how this Muslim woman got to give a fireside in front of members of a stake and changed many people's perspective. (Oh, he also called me a Pharisee and a Sadducee.)

OK. So do I truly understand where he is coming from? No. I feel like everything he told me was not about himself but the problem. I still don't understand exactly why he is doing this. "Raising awareness" seems very far fetched.

Here is my analysis of our conversation. First, I heard him tell someone before that he served his mission in Texas. I highly doubt that he has been talking to girls for past two and half years (and more) to get advice on relationship because I doubt that he actually dated anyone (except this one blonde girl...). Also, I don't understand why he needs to bring up the issue of racism and even go to different website that talk about racism in the Church. If you need advice on dating, you do not need to talk about racism in the Church.

Also, I believe that he should talk about issues like this with his bishop, not with others especially with people he does not know. He needs to ask advice from people who know him well and those who know this girl well.

Many many people whom he talks to do not care about what he has to say. They don't want him to talk for hours and they do not ask questions. They are forced into this kind of conversation because he led the conversation that way. He is manipulating them to think that he is raising awareness. If he truly wanted to raise awareness, he does not need to hide his intentions by saying something about getting advice on dating.

The example that he gave of the Muslim woman also does not support what he is doing because people who came to the fireside came because they wanted to not because they were forced to. This woman did not trick them into listening to her. They were ready to learn from her. On the other hand, the African dude forces people to listen to him and causes contention to arise from others. He may not feel it but others do.

I told him that he should not counter-argue with others because to them, he is threatening their beliefs and values. Their "truths" are challenged by this guy and they are trying to defend it but all he does is counter-argue it and cause the spirit of contention to arise from them.

To summarize everything, if his intention is truly to raise awareness, I gladly accept it (meaning his intention). I also do agree that there is such thing as racism in the Church but I do not believe that is is always negative. It could be neutral meaning it is not necessarily against other races (perhaps just stereotypes in their minds). I still do not trust him and believe that he has other intentions than what he has told me. I also believe that his way about "raising awareness" is wrong. He should inform them rather than argue with them. He should not be overbearing. He should walk away when things get heated up.

After having said all this, I told you that I would talk about what the real problem is. The real problem is that it does not matter whether there is racism in the Church or not just like it doesn't matter if Christ was married or not. It does not save us. If he is truly worried about racism, he should be encouraging us to follow Christ, not bash on the Church. He should focus on Christlike attributes. He should talk about how we can follow two greatest commandments: love God and love your neighbors. When you follow those two commandments, we would do everything that God commands us and we would love everyone equally. All the problems in the world would go away. We wouldn't have to worry about racism, sexism, wars, contentions, anger, etc. What truly matters is always the foundation of the gospel. Nothing else matters until you have the strong foundation of the gospel.

Recording, Remembering, Learning

Time to time, it's good to go back and read what I have written. Exactly a year ago, I wrote this post and about two years ago, I wrote this post.

There are reasons why we write/record things. Things like inspirations and revelations can teach us greatly in later days. Nephi even testified of this truth in 2 Nephi 4:15,
And upon these I write the things of my soul, and many of the scriptures which are engraven upon the plates of brass. For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children.
Things I write not only benefit me but benefit others and I have experienced it few times. It doesn't matter who reads this as long as people benefit from it.

I pray that this blog would exist for a long time so that my posterity can read this as they grow. Maybe I should print out everything I have written on this blog and keep turn them into a scrapbook. That would be cool.

Our Nothingness

"And again I say unto you as I have said before, that as ye have come to the knowledge of the glory of God, or if ye have known of his goodness and have tasted of his love, and have received a remission of your sins, which causeth such exceedingly great joy in your souls, even so I would that ye should remember, and always retain in remembrance, the greatness of God, and your own nothingness, and his goodness and long-suffering towards you, unworthy creatures, and humble yourselves even in the depths of humility, calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standing steadfastly in the faith of that which is to come, which was spoken by the mouth of the angel." -Mosiah 4:11-

What do we have to boast? What do we have to become prideful?

I get annoyed when members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints boast of what they have and put themselves higher than others. Why? Because they have nothing to boast. God has given us everything and He can take them away. Even if we have gained riches, God can take our loved ones or even our lives whenever He wills it. Do we not pray to God and ask for His help? Do we not pray to be saved? Do we not beg to be forgiven? What do we have to boast?

We are nothing. We are unworthy. Because we are nothing and unworthy, we should always be humble. Humble enough to ask God to forgive our sins and make us worthy. Only through the Atonement of Christ, we can become worthy, clean, and perfect.

Can you really set yourself higher than others?

"Do not pray as the Zoramites do, for ye have seen that they pray to be heard of men, and to be praised for their wisdom.
"Do not say: O God, I thank thee that we are better than our brethren; but rather say: O Lord, forgive my unworthiness, and remember my brethren in mercy—yea, acknowledge your unworthiness before God at all times." -Alma 38:13-14-

What My Blog Consists Of

I am glad that "relationship" and "dating" aren't huge after editing for every post instead of 10 most recent posts... You have to realize that some of the words are large because of the website, not necessarily due to my posts.

Asking a Girl Out

This is something that everybody knows but forget to remember.

Dating, or more specifically going on dates, is to get to know each other. It is not to make out. It is not to make a boyfriend/girlfriend. If you don't know the person, you don't want to have a relationship with that person.

So when a guy asks a girl out on a date, it should mean "hey, you sound pretty cool! I would like to get to know you better." rather than "I want to marry you." Dates are no big deals! Don't make them sound so serious. Besides dating is mostly in the Mormon culture. Everywhere else it's "hey, we've been hanging out with each everyday and we like each other so we should 'date (steady)'."

Going on a date should not be a big deal. Asking a girl should not be a big deal. However, people make it a big deal because if someone gets asked out, it's like "this person wants to marry me." That might be true for some weird, crazy, desperate guys but not true for 99% of us.

Don't make it hard for guys to ask you out, ladies. Make it easy for us. Don't make a big deal out of it, please.
